Two things ...

1) Finally got back in the saddle last night in a really competitive, 16-person home tourney. I did not make the money, but I think coming off 15 days of not playing, I was sharper and more focused. Needless to say, it was probably the best poker I played in a long time. The one foolish mistake I made -- calling with four to a flush after the flop for almost all of my chips -- is something I don't normally do, and I can look back and say, "That's why, you dumbass." I did lose two tough hands on the river, and another big pot ended in a split when a deuce on the river paired the board, and we both ended with the same full house. (I had the best kicker before.) All of that was easier to swallow knowing I was playing better overall.

2) I don't have any little league stories like that, but the one year I was an assistant in the last five (son moved up), the head coach and I got into it during a game. We play league, then district, then state. In the district championship game, we're down 6-0 in the last inning, a couple of runners on, and our CF -- in his last year -- had just sold out for a line drive. The next batter lines another to CF off the coach's son (who was getting lit up) and he misplays it. Coach calls timeout, and pulls the CF. I am pissed, but the other assistant tells me to hold my tongue. Next batter, line drive to left. Pickup players misplays it. It's 9-0. Timeout, pulls him. The coach's wife yells, "Come on (son), you're going to have to do it yourself!" (Never mind they were line drives to the OF, and we were down 6-0 before the inning started!) I called my son, playing 2B, off the field, but the same assistant talked me out of it again. I did give the head coach an earful. Those kids deserved better. We lost two games all year, both at district to that team. They won state for the second year in a row. We ran out of gas, but those kids had laid it all on the line before that inning.

Mouthy little league moms are the best.  I remember alot from my LL days but some of the most memorable are yells from moms sitting in the bleachers.  If you want your kids to excel at a sport and by excel I do not just mean be the very best but i mean have fun and enjoy.  Shut up.  Let the kids play.  If they are having fun the will work hard..if they are not they wont.  Screaming parents from the stands doesn't make a kid have fun.  You would not have been wrong to pull your kid.  I might have.

Have umpired Little Leaue in the past and I have to say the worst people in the park are the crazy mothers ("how can you make that call, my angel would never get beat by that crappy kid pitching") ( I actually heard a mother say this), Insane Dads ("I'm going to kick your azz for making that stupid call.") (another actual statement), and coaches who think they are Joe Torre ("I'm going to have little Johnnie run a squeeze play while making chicken noises to distract their pitcher) (Okay that one wasn't real but very close to what I've heard).  The only ones who get screwed are the kids on the field.

Two comments ... the team I have this year of 11 and 12 years old has been one of the best to coach. I'm having a blast, and it really boils down to one thing: Effort. They work their butts off and have fun doing it.

Here's the kicker. I was umping the plate in T-ball one night. Ever hear the old, "Don't pick the ball up!" We would blow the whistle, creating a dead ball, and if the batter picked up a foul ball, we'd say, "Sorry, already blew the whistle. It's a dead ball anyway."

One night a dad from my town went nuts. He blamed the umps for the loss because of the described scenario above, but the crazy part came as the teams were leaving the field and the parents were still milling about the stands. I am not kidding, he yelled, "Well ... I bet my d-ck is bigger than yours!"

Classic! Buttermaker would have never thought of that one!

Classic!  My immediate reaction would have to be "ummmmm  yeah but mine gets used way more than yours judging by that cow you brought to the park (insert screams and ambulance sounds here)"   Shocked

Are we talking about my pity party or little league?Huh  Just kidding....I coached 9/10 year olds a long time ago. It was a blast.

As far as poker goes.....yes, I'll still be around Wednesday....it's a habit now.  I have switch to multi-tabling micro limits and have been doing pretty good.  It's an interesting challenge to keep up with 3 or 4 tables.
